BAU Correspondent: The workshop on Agriculture Research, Development & Innovation in the haor was organized by the Bangladesh Agricultural University Research System (BAURES) in collaboration with The City Bank held on 31st August, 2026.
The concluding workshop was chaired by Professor Dr. Md. Shamsul Alam Bhuiyan, Director of the Bangladesh Agricultural University Research System (BAURES). Professor Dr. A. K. Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan, Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), attended the programme as the Chief Patron.
The special guests included Dr. Md. Abdus Salam, Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC); Dr. Md. Monowar Karim Khan of the Krishi Gobeshona Foundation (KGF) and Mr. Mashrur Arefin, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of City Bank.
The welcome address was delivered by Professor Dr. Muhammad Javidul Haque Bhuiyan, former Associate Director of BAURES.
Professor Dr. M. Hammadur Rahman, former Director of BAURES, presented the keynote paper at the workshop. He said that the project was implemented to address various challenges related to agriculture, livestock, fisheries, the environment, and livelihoods in the Haor region.The research focused on climate-resilient agricultural production, crop diversification, disease and pest management, food and nutrition security, and increasing farmers’ income. Under the project, 22 research projects were conducted across seven Haor-dominated districts of the country. He added
City Bank provided a total of Tk 40 million (Tk 4 crore) in funding for the entire project. The workshop brought together policymakers, researchers, agricultural experts, development professionals and representatives of the financial sector to review the research findings and innovative initiatives undertaken for sustainable agricultural development in the Haor region of Bangladesh.
The discussions focused on the challenges and opportunities of agriculture in the Haor ecosystem, including climate change, flooding, sustainable production systems, technological innovation and improving the livelihoods of farming communities.
