Smart Farming for Better Apples: How Digital Innovation is Transforming Orchards in Jumla, Nepal

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Special Reporter: In the misty highlands of Jumla, an agricultural revolution is taking root—powered by the sun, sensors, and data.

Through UNDP’s Renewable Energy for Resilient Agri-Food Systems (RERAS) project, supported by Norway, local apple farmers are adopting smart farming technologies that make orchards more productive, efficient, and climate-resilient.

With solar-powered sensors tracking soil, weather, and nutrient levels in real time, farmers now make data-driven decisions—using less water and fertilizer while producing higher-quality apples that fetch nearly twice the price.

This is more than innovation; it’s empowerment—where renewable energy meets digital transformation to create sustainable livelihoods and resilient food systems in rural Nepal.
