Special Reporter: The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) has won the Philippines Sustainability Innovation of the Year – Agriculture and the Vietnam Sustainability Innovation of the Year – Agriculture in the Asian Innovation Excellence Awards 2025!
In the Philippines, IRRI was recognized for the work of its International Rice Genebank, which preserves over 132,000 rice seed samples, the world’s largest collection of rice diversity. This vital resource supports research, breeding, and innovation for climate-resilient, nutritious, and high-yield rice.
In Vietnam, IRRI was awarded for its technical support to the “Sustainable Development of One Million Hectares of High-Quality and Low-Emission Rice” program, which helps farmers adopt climate-smart technologies and achieve measurable gains—up to 40% water savings and higher incomes per hectare.
These recognitions reflect IRRI’s enduring commitment to science-driven solutions that make rice systems more sustainable, equitable, and resilient for billions who depend on them.
