Special Reporter: Suhani Chauhan, a Class 12 student from Delhi, has created a groundbreaking innovation in sustainable farming. She developed the So-Apt Agro Vehicle, a solar-powered machine designed to assist small-scale farmers while ensuring zero carbon emissions. Her invention is not only environmentally friendly but also aims to make farming more efficient and affordable for the agricultural community.

The So-Apt Agro Vehicle is priced at approximately 3 lakh, making it a cost-effective alternative to traditional tractors that can cost upwards of 8 lakh. The vehicle is versatile, equipped with tools for seed sowing, hole drilling, irrigation, and spraying fertilizers and pesticides, thus combining multiple farming functions into one machine. It is powered by solar panels, completely eliminating the need for fossil fuels and aiming to reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 272,000 metric tonnes annually. To ensure uninterrupted operation, even during cloudy conditions or nighttime, the vehicle features a backup engine powered by solar energy.

Suhani’s inspiration for this innovation began at the age of 12 during a school trip to the farms of Manesar. Observing the difficulties faced by farmers, she resolved to make a difference. By Class 8, she had started working on the design of the vehicle, with encouragement and support from her science teacher and family. Her extensive research, which included interviewing over 1,000 farmers, allowed her to refine the vehicle to cater to the specific needs of small-scale farmers.

Her dedication and innovation have not gone unnoticed. In January 2024, Suhani was honored with the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar in the Innovation category. This recognition celebrates her commitment to sustainable agriculture and her potential to revolutionize farming practices in India. Currently, Suhani is collaborating with companies to mass-produce the So-Apt Agro Vehicle, aiming to make it widely accessible to farmers across the country.

Suhani’s journey is a testament to the power of youth-driven innovation and determination. Her efforts not only address the environmental challenges of our time but also empower farmers with sustainable and affordable technology. She serves as an inspiration for young innovators worldwide, proving that age is no barrier to making a significant impact.
